How To Choose The Best Water Filter Technology For Your Home

shower_3dFiltered Water Vs Distilled Water – Which is the best system for your home?

In most states, the law requires the manufacturer of any type of water filter to state the exact specifications for the performance claims within the product’s performance data sheet. It is mandatory that this document should specify the filtration statistics of each of the contaminants screened by the product in question as well as the cost of a replacement water filter. This information is required to be enclosed in the packaging of the purification device and on any promotional material that is disseminated. Armed with that information, consumers are in a better position to compare the different water filters available in the market.

Drawbacks Of Comparing Water Filters

The comparison between one water filter and another might not be enough to make an accurate judgment. A sole focus on the most popular types of filtration often neglects non-leading brands as well as an array of other technologies capable of the same performance, if not better. Examples of these include the typical “Distillation” and “Reverse Osmosis” systems.

There is, in fact, an underlying debate as to which of these water filters and water filtration methods are the most beneficial to the everyday consumer: de-mineralized water vs. filtered water. Scientific studies point to filtered water which still contains the natural trace elements as the healthiest option currently available on the commercial market.

Adverse Effects of Distilled Water

Dr. Zolton Rona, author of “The Joy of Health”, highlights the potential long term damage of “mineral deficiencies and an acid state” as some of the more detrimental side- effects of de-mineralized water. This fact is further supported by Dr. Paavo Airola, nutritionist and author of “How to Get Well” and “Cancer… Causes, Prevention and Healing.” He stated that the “extended consumption of distilled water eventually results in multiple mineral deficiencies.”

So what happens when we drink de-mineralized water? Why is it that water passed through a water filter is so much healthier? The answer lies in the body and the way the body copes with de-mineralized water. As mentioned before, the consumption of de-mineralized water causes a mineral deficiency and promotes acidity as it contains an abundance of hydrogen. To stabilize the effect of the acidity, our bodies tend to draw the minerals it needs from our teeth and bones, weakening them in turn. Additionally it needs mentioning that our bodies release more free radicals in a systemic acidic environment, increasing the risks of cancer.

Another additional factor that should count as indisputable evidence of the health of filtered water is that nowhere on this planet is there any single natural occurring spring supply de-mineralized water. In fact, all springs contain important trace minerals such as calcium and magnesium; minerals that are essential for our bodies to function properly.

TDS (total dissolved solids) meters are often used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the water filter at removing contaminants. This, however, is misleading as TDS meters really only indicate the amount of calcium, magnesium and other dissolved minerals in the water and are no indication whatsoever of the purity of the water or the level of contaminants.

What’s Wrong With Bottled & Tap Water?

Here's what the FDA thinks about bottled water ... "Companies that market bottled water as being safer than tap water are defrauding the American public."

---------------------

Ralph Nadar says, his study group, exercising the Freedom of Information Act, reviewed thousands of documents and concluded with the somber assessment that: "U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer."

---------------------

In January, about 20 million gallons of sewage flowed into Pennsylvania's Schuylkill River after a 42-inch pipe ruptured near Reading, Pa.

---------------------

In March, between 700,000 and 1.3 million gallons of human feces and other waste spilled from a damaged pipe into Grand Lagoon at Panama City Beach, Fla.

---------------------

"When people flush their toilets, they think the sewage is going to the treatment plant, and that's where they deserve to have it go," said Nancy Stoner, a project director at the Natural Resources Defense Council, which says the government isn't doing enough to police sewage overflows.

Gannett News Service analyzed enforcement and compliance records compiled by the EPA and some state regulators between January 2003 and February this year. The analysis found:

At least one-third of the nation's large, publicly owned sewage treatment systems have been penalized by the EPA or state regulators for sewage spills or other violations. The penalties included fines and orders to fix problems or expand treatment capacity.

It has been recently reported that water samples taken from a US town’s water supply showed that the average level of trihalomethanes has increased about 9 percent from its previous average, which was above standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The trihalomethanes are a carcinogenic byproduct formed when chlorine used to disinfect drinking water interacts with organic materials in the water supply.
One theory about why the trihalomethanes levels might be higher is that the farther water travels from the water treatment plant, the more time chlorine has to interact with organic materials.

There have also been reports of drugs found in drinking water samples taken from all over the United States, Canada and other areas of the world.

These were waters intended for public use.
