Why Not All House Water Filters Are Equal

Thanks to rapid advancement in recent technologies, the everyday consumer can now benefit from having easier access to previously “exclusive” products. Among these, water filtration products have also been making headlines in health circles world wide. Yet as with everything else, there are those house water filters that do not necessarily measure up to the claims and promises they make; several water purifiers produce results that are a little better than normal tap water.
How does one determine the efficacy of house water filters?
Advertising the Impossible
Advertisers of these products rely on catch-phrase advertising, often using terms and phrases such as “Provides Pure Water” or “Removes Contaminants”, which when carefully thought about, are almost impossible to achieve. One of the reasons why this is impossible is that water becomes impure and contaminated (not always harmfully so) even when exposed to fresh air. The best way to check the validity of these claims is by examining the accompanying analysis of these house water filters. It is the law in some states that the advertising has to reflect the veracity and capability of these claims.
Reading the Fine Print
An additional tactic that can be used to spot the fakes from the real thing is to do a little research. Many states require these filtration systems to be registered and certified including CA, IA and WI. This means that the manufacturers of the house water filters need to provide statistical data on their products as well as any accompanying technical data and promotional material. Once all these have been reviewed the manufacturer gets the go-ahead from these states to market its product. When in doubt, the California Department of Health Certificate keeps exact records of those manufacturers who make the grade as well as those who do not (those who don’t will often avoid marketing of their home water filters in these states).
Does Quality Always come at a Price?
And finally we arrive at the all-important price factor. As opposed to popular belief, the best water filtration systems are not necessarily the most expensive. Even if the house water filters do not measure up to expected performance, manufacturers will often sell their product at higher prices if only because people will often believe a product to be more reliable and trustworthy if it is more expensive.
As a summarization, we’d like to emphasize caution against those impossible promises and high prices. Always do a little bit of research and see if the product is being sold in CA, IA or WI by contacting the respective certification authority.
